How to attach a custom sub record to a parent record in Netsuite

The Problem:
You are creating a custom record called publisher and you want to connect that so that a partner can have many publishers in Netsuite.


The Solution:

1. Create the custom publisher record by going to Setup->Customisation->Record Types->New
2. Fill in and save the new custom record.
3. Now go to the fields tab and click the "New Field" button.
4. We want to add a field of type List/record and give it the type of the record we want to be the parent of this field, in this case a partner. Fill in the form like the snapshot below. The most important thing is to tick the highlighted check box called "Record is Parent". That is how you make sure that the partner record becomes a parent record to suppliers. This is really not straight forward the first time you try to figure it out. Do also make sure the new partner field is ticked a stored, this is so that the added publishers can be related to the partners persistently. 
5. When this is done you will get a new list called publishers on the partner record. This will by default go on the custom tab of the partner record. Feel free to move it to another sub tab. When you look at a partner record the next time it will have an empty list of publishers. The list of publishers will now also be available for joins in the saved searches.
